Leos Cepicky, violin

Leos CepickyIn the late spring of 2004 Leos, emerging from three weeks of sedation after a bicycle accident, woke and asked three things of his wife, Katerina: the first 'Have you got everything you want? The second 'Please bring me my violin' and the third 'Please bring a television so that I can watch the Euro Cup 2004'

This is Leos in a nutshell: family, music and sport.

He has always enjoyed cycling and skiing but will probably not be doing too much of either of these in the future after his recent experience.

Born in 1965 he started learning the violin at the age of 6 and took up the piano four years later. Following in his footsteps, both his son Jakub (b. 1990) and daughter, Elisabeth (b. 1995) play the violin and Leos had the great pleasure of playing the Bach Double Concerto with his son in a public performance in September 2004.

Leos, after spending 6 years at the Conservatoire in Pardubice, Bohemia, quickly made his mark as a violinist of remarkable talent and, arriving in Prague in 1985, became a founder member of the Wihan Quartet, while still continuing throughout the years to play solo violin as often as time permits.

Playing violin concertos and violin/piano duos are his hobby, as a welcome relief from the pressures of Quartet playing. Leos Cepicky plays on a 2003 prize-winning violin by Jan Spidlen, owned by the violin dealer Mila Strnad.
